So, I started this Substack as The Feral Author very suddenly this past summer, because the platform I was using for the reader subscription for my fiction work became problematic.
I had already been considering starting a Substack because I knew I was going nomadic shortly thereafter, so Substack seemed like the logical place to move it.
However, because it was so sudden, I really didn’t know what I was doing with it, and it was all a bit scattered. This is also why, while I set up the option of a paid subscription, I was very clear that at that time there was no difference between the paid and the free.
After a couple of months here, I’ve settled into using this platform pretty much only to document my travels aboard the train, and so it really doesn’t make sense to connect it to my author brand. I may, at some point in the future, try a new platform for my fiction subscription, but at this time, I have no concrete plans to do so.
To support the evolution of the Substack, I’ve changed the name from The Feral Author to The Neurodivergent Nomad. From here on, while I may occasionally mention my urban fantasy work, this Substack will be focused on sharing my adventures and on empowering other neurodivergent people who want to travel but may find it challenging.
Additionally, I will be putting some things behind a paywall. Most things will still be free, and all of the neurodivergent travel tip posts will always be free. I will also share my adventures to free subscribers and some basic informational posts about the train stations I visit and the routes I take.
The bonus paid content will go more in-depth about the stations and routes, being less about my experiences and practical info, and delving into history and other researched facts.
Additionally, I want to start interviewing people I meet on the train, doing slice-of-life profiles on other travelers. These profiles will be for paid subscribers only.
I will also occasionally post polls to paid subscribers when I’m trying to decide where I want to travel to next, and you’ll get to help me pick the destination you most want to see.
And finally, members of the “Founders” tier, which is a pay-what-you-want-but-higher-than-the-other-tier tier (there is a suggested price, but it is only a suggestion) will get postcards in the snail mail from places I go. Obviously, this will require you to give me a mailing address, but I will only use it to send you delightful things, never sell it or spam you.
I hope this new format will be enjoyable for all of you!
